This is an interview with a famous Swedish man known mostly as Carl Jan.
He is a chef and also ran a famous restaurant out of an inn in the middle of nowhere.
He also has made appearances on television, in those 'dance with me' shows, among others.
I learned that Swedes can be quite patriotic, and that complimenting their country is a good way to get them to open up.

I guess something exploded and it was radioactive and people got injured and irradiated. The injured were sent to a normal hospital, and nobody told the staff about the radioactive nature of the injured people. Cool.

Blog: The Software Developer's Guide to Career Ownership
https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/software-developers-career-ownership-guide/
Nothing too surprising here. Try to make yourself stand out, do a good job.
It is nice to see it in a coherent list.
It does always make me wonder why such successful people try to leave their professions.

News: Why is Norwegian Air Failing
https://qz.com/1688156/why-is-norwegian-air-failing/
Seems like they just keep betting wrong. Selling assets, borrowing high, fixing gas prices high, renting the wrong planes, pissing of their union.
But hey, I just got a great deal from them.
So, I'm winning.
A good idea might be a company providing the best value to its customers.

Blog: Where have all the pirates gone?
https://lithub.com/where-have-all-the-pirates-gone/
This isn't quite a blog, actually it is an excerpt from a book about the history of pirates. I found it interesting in its scope, but I wonder if they will be talking about the pirates in space that litter scifi writing.
Anyway, I learned a little bit, mostly about the mix of religion and piracy. I'd like to learn more but I also doubt that I will be reading this book any time soon.
Looks fun, though.

Nothing super new here, Duolingo teaches languages, Esperanto is a created language with a dedicated following.
It is well written, and there are some good quotes:
She asked them the usual questions: what did you do, who did you hang out with, where were your friends from. “We don’t know,” they said.

Basically tell your boss what you're doing so they don't stress you out when they randomly or spontaneously ask you. Give them what they need to know so that you don't have to asked.
A book that I'd never heard of but that sounds interesting is High Output Management. I've been thinking that books about service industry might be the most helpful thing for me to understand people's psychology. Most things seem like transactions, or job interviews.

News: The Worker Shortage in the US
https://www.vox.com/2019/8/12/20801941/us-labor-shortage-workers-quit
Yes, wages are not high enough.
Or maybe there's too much stupid work?
What happens to other countries when we take all of their labor?
This article is better than most, but still it is an act of almost ludicrous navel gazing to ignore the impact on people, persons, individuals, other nations, and many other factors.
Do I really care about the economy if I am not getting paid? I believe the answer is no, I do not care about a shortage of hotel workers.

Blog: A walk in Hong Kong
https://idlewords.com/2019/08/a_walk_in_hong_kong.htm
Here you can read how the Hong Kong protestors organize their marches. Simple walks of groups of people. The social fabric exposed, holding up a great many things.
The healthcare on the streets of Hong Kong is better than anywhere is the USA.
The mega city, bigger and better than anything in the USA.
Sometimes I wonder why I am here, wherever I am, in front of a computer. Reading about these people, not just a person, these people, getting it done, makes me feel like I belong somewhere else.
This was an inspirational and dreary read, both.

Blog: Developer News

As part of free code camp there's this thing called developer news that is growing.
I've been using free code camp for awhile, but i'd never heard of developer news until today.
This is a promotion blog piece, but it isn't fluff. It speaks to the ideals that people want to see.
Efficiency, quality, access, and connecting the globe.
Those are hard things to live up to, but free code camp seems to be doing a good job.

One of the ice sculptures mentioned in the story was made in Austin. Cool.

News: Car Crashes Aren't Always Unavoidable
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/07/car-crashes-arent-always-unavoidable/592447/
Well I'm drinking the coolaid on this one. My grandfather died in an auto accident. And I love walking. Driving is so stressful, especially when everyone is on their phones, or high on opioids or whatever causes terrible driving.
Anyway, this was worth reading twice.
Automobile supremacy. Traffic Violence.
Kills 40,000 a year.
"parking lots now cover more than a third of the land area of some U.S. cities"
"Why are we taxing bus riders to pay rich people to buy McMansions and luxury electric SUVs?"
"In other words, the very fact that car crashes cause so much social damage makes it hard for those who are injured or killed by reckless drivers to receive justice."

News: Middle America Porn is on the Rise in Our Bleak Capitalist Hell

There certainly are some funny links in this. My depression fucks me for two minutes while I do nothing about it.
There are some marketing lessons. Things are so boring that they have never been done.
But why do people jerk off at hobby lobby? Why do people enjoy watching videos of that?
I don't know if this article is asking those questions or posing answers to them, either.

News: The Hidden History of How the Government Kick Started Silicon Valley
https://onezero.medium.com/the-hidden-history-of-how-the-government-kick-started-silicon-valley-24e2bafa9697
Stanford was built to put useful things into the world. Other universities were made to educate clergymen, or to serve other purposes specific to the time of their creation.
That's about all I can remember from this one. Its been so long since I've read it. It is a fun story, but I think the timespan is so long and so complex that it isn't going to fit into a single article, but it would be too boring and tedious to read a book about it. Besides, silicon valley is still unfolding.

News: What led Peru's former president to take his own life
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/07/08/what-led-perus-former-president-to-take-his-own-life
It was a month or so ago when I read this. I had never heard of this man, nor his party, though I considered myself somewhat abreast of things in Peru.
Well, I guess I wasn't. It was well written, I remember. With information, portraits, people, perspective, and tidbits. There was drama. This story feels real, yet I don't feel like I have all of it. The author is honest enough about that being the case, at least. It is a story of a person and a politician, and a scandal and politics. Built out of pixels.

News: The Stonks Meme
https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/stonks-meme-boglehead-investing
It is a good meme. It mocks finance, and our collective and individual knowledge of finance. And here we are, at the whims of powerful people who run the finance system, hiding important elements from us.
And a reminder that ETFs are the best ways to make money. To literally do nothing is best.

I dunno, the article also convinced me that this speaker was pretty good at doing what he does. But he is an asshole and may have broken the law.
The speaker might be proven innocent if he can testify against himself.
Seems more like normal politics than scandal to me.
