So this lady, she was the boss, talked a bunch of shit in a big chat room. A sort of shoot first ask questions later type of administration. I thought these people were supposed to be masters of their domain. Well, now she probably has a really nice golden parachute. This whole no neutral platform idea is fun. I hope bigger beefier newsrooms bite into it with all their resources, but they don't have the guts to talk shit about their own golden goose.

News: Chinese Americans and Racism
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2019-12-10/the-u-s-government-s-mistrust-of-chinese-americans
Kinda looks like a bunch of bigots are in charge. Wasting resources bothering innocent people. But that is also the slant of this article. Really it is a story about just one guy. Where are the other examples? I believe there are more and I'd like to read about them. Racism is a big deal, and this article could be longer.

News: The Psychology of Late People
https://getpocket.com/explore/item/why-some-people-are-always-running-late
Well, they crave the exhilaration of being rushed. So they procrastinate. Then change what you crave, they say. Well, they also say to use the word and and not but. I dunno about all this. I can be on time, and I can also be late.
Maybe I'm both?
It was a surprise to hear once that I was always late. Well, I dunno. Who am I again?
Anyway, I don't think I will be paying anyone to help me get on time. Just a bunch of marketing.

News: They lost N.J.'s biggest game
https://projects.nj.com/features/thegame/index.html
Well these guys lost a big football game. There was a school with a couple of legendary coaches. The whole town got into the game. Losing the game meant being an actual loser. I dunno, this doesn't sound like good sportsmanship.
The way the game was lost, with officials giving extra time. With the crowd already celebrating the win.. only to be ordered off the field. I'm sure it all hurt. Or maybe everyone who was in pain after the game, mental pain - to be clear, maybe they all have CTE. Maybe they've been hit in the head too many times. I wish everyone well. Football is the wrong game for everything but videogames.

Well, they managed to write this without really talking about white supremacy. Nice work. I doubt many are ready for that.
I did not know Karen was a verb.
I feel bad for Karens and Sarahs and Emilys.
I hope everyone can be friends, but we probably can't.

Well, the winners tell the story, and these two guys lost. Maybe they were three guys. Their families had been deprived of food and shelter during winter. They sought revenge. But, the story has disappeared. White protestants versus brown catholics, something something.
USA and racism. Was a big deal, still is.

Well, this guy thinks this shit is over. That's not how memes work, honey.
But he does make some sense, but really doesn't get it. Even his woke guilt bullshit is just rehashed liberal guilt for his archetype. He needs to love memes, and realize that they are for people.

News: Quantum Computing is Bigger than the Internet
https://onezero.medium.com/the-awesome-potential-of-quantum-computing-83a294db0cdf
So yeah, I think this is a piece of deluded propaganda.
Quantum computing already exists, and the author of this piece knows it. That's a lie of omission. The NSA is totally in charge of research on shit like this. I read that in a cryptography book written for kids.
So, it is totally being used to compromise security systems and build evil weapons. Super viruses or super soldiers, the two examples of evil outcomes of quantum computing given in the piece, these are nothing compared to destroying the universe or something less cataclysmic like ending humanity. The author of this piece knows all of this, too.
And then there's the part that the author might not know. Quantum computing will change society, and what will the outcome be? That's just a sliver, quantum computing might make the music that changes everyone's lives. But it will probably be used for mass murder. This is the reason I don't like to read the news. People, especially powerful people, need to take the risks of technology seriously. Let's talk about pollution, society, medicine. Don't do it in bullet points.

https://www.kut.org/post/why-do-grackles-flock-grocery-store-parking-lots-dusk
So yeah, the shade trees give them room to sleep in groups, and the open space helps them escape if predators show up. The parking lots are ideal grackle habitats. There's usually some french fry producing restaurant nearby, and they love french fries.

News: Kpop's dark side
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2019-11-06/k-pop-s-dark-side-assault-prostitution-suicide-and-spycams
Well the premise of this wasn't a surprise really, a dark underbelly. There were a few shockers. The part about targeting young runaways was particularly revolting to me. If only there were kpop songs about that. So yes, the contrast between what kpop lyricizes and what actually happens, will it get more stark yet?
But yeah, this article seems pretty well researched, even if it is mostly a compilation of several stories. Mostly the people who are found guilty resign and the machine rolls on. There are no signs of reform, really.

News: Filmmaker bared his soul, ruined his life
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/30/magazine/caveh-zahedi-documentary-film.html
In other words, subjecting reality to art doesn’t make it less real or less true. It makes it more real and more true.
That’s the goal of art, she said, her voice catching a little: to tell other people what it feels like to be alive.
“The central trope of all my films, I think, is: ‘You want this. You don’t get it. The thing you get instead is better,’ ” he said. “And that’s the central trope of life.”
Those are few quotes from the story. Well, it is an advertisement. I might watch some of his films, maybe even the show, called The Show About the Show. Maybe.
Or maybe not. I might just think about this character, who seems to have traded his success as a filmmaker in for his success as a person. I mean, being a good filmmaker has destroyed several of his relationships. So, that might mean he is a bad filmmaker. I don't know.
But yes, it is thought provoking. I'm curious to see if he kills himself when the show ends, as he says. I'd like to hear more from his students. I'd like to hear more about the author of this piece, so we can measure their objectivity.

This article is insane. This guy is pushing for us to break all kinds of laws, the spirit and the letter, to colonize other countries.
Other people are using troops without insignia, why don't we? Is this the monkey and the bridge.
He has some points, unpreparedness, etc. I'm more interested in defense, not just blowing shit up. But he also says he has a lot of leadership in the military behind his ideas. That sounds l ike a coup.

News: Canada sleepwalks into the future
https://www.politico.com/news/2019/10/21/canada-election-political-challenges-052249
This article makes notice of a few interesting things. Canada caught between China and the USA, not too much difference in the candidates, no real debate.
Maybe Canada is doing the smart thing, not making any waves, biding its time until a real decision has to be made. Or maybe there needs to be systemic change, real debate, real participation. Neither of these things are considered by this article, so hell, whatever
It was at least a bit thought provoking in its vapidity.

So some guy tweeted something, he worked for an NBA team, then the whole team got blocked or unsponsored or whatever.
Free speech and free hong kong, its gonna cost ya.
Lotta drama. This was interesting, but also this is the kind of stuff that makes me not want to read the news. None of the people actually making decisions have any input. Let's hear what they have to say, let's understand them. Instead they are veiled behind their nations, their businesses, their own stories. I want their story to be shared. Or else, let's not read about it.

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2019/10/modern-type-depression-japan/600160/
Well it does smell a bit like racism but ok.
People get bummed out, stressed out, overwhelmed, and they take a leap of absence. Sounds normal to me. Why would you work yourself to death? Should your life not be important.
I know that's not what they said. but it should be about human lives rather than Japanese lives. There isn't enough context, in my opinion.
But yeah, this seems to be built on an interview with one person. I need interviews with lots of people. Full transcripts of each, lets not make any generalizations if we don't have to.

News: 1983 Beirut Bombing Kinda Like Today
https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/the-1983-beirut-barracks-bombing-and-the-current-us-retreat-from-syria
Well I'd never heard of this bombing. It was the worst loss of life in a single day for the marines since Iwo Jima
And yeah, a sudden withdraw. What could go wrong?
But I think this article is also a big slop of skewed views that go unexplained, some might call it propaganda.
As the U.S. wrestles with drug policy, the environment, corruption, natural disasters: pretty much everything. Is it really so bad that Russia and Iran "gain some ground"? I mean, it is a big fucking chess game and people aren't people.

News: The Ghost Towers of Iran's Housing Crisis
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/10/21/ghost-towers
So there was a housing shortage, so they built big apartment blocks in the desert. Looks like South Korea a bit, but yeah they forgot to add community space like parks and places for shops. Markets have moved in but they look like tarps covering parking lots. People have really long commutes. It looks like... a disaster, or maybe a couple of disasters
So they didn't even build enough of them? Would more shitty buildings far from actual city life make a housing crisis better, or make commutes worse?
Well anyway, check out the photos. It looks pretty bleak, but kind of neat.

Well gross
The website said "don't upload adult porn"
Lots of the people arrested for this, busted for this, were in law enforcement in the USA.
The server was based in South Korea.
Thankfully they were bad at web design, they left the name of the server in the open.
Woulda been cool if the popo had gotten this done a bit earlier
I guess they rescued some kids.
But what is the overall arch here? That the internet needs to be controlled and monitored? Or that it is already controlled and monitored but that the people in charge are sleeping on the important shit? What do they think is important?

So I googled, "what is an api?" and this article came up. They use a metaphor of an electrical plug to explain an API. You don't have to be an electrician to plug something in. An API is the part you plug in. The API probably does some voodoo in a rust or C to get you what you need in your browser, but you don't have to use rust or C yourself.
Some APIs are built into the browser, some are third party. This article links to a lot of other things that I need to read. I'm glad to have found this resource.

News: Elijah Cummings has died
https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2019/10/17/oversight-chairman-elijah-cummings-dies-487447
He just got promoted in January but he died. How did he do all that work while being sick?
Why don't they tell us what he died from?
Well, I guess he was critical of the president. That's cool. I guess, but to what end.
I don't really know who this guy was or is.
Who is going to take his place in the important committee?

News: wework's ideal life, for a day
http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/10/i-lived-adam-neumanns-perfect-life-for-a-dayit-was-dismal.html
Well it looks like things are over priced and generally not that cool. The nap room with a person snoring. The workers who confuse appointments, maybe that isn't special to WeWork. But yeah, white claw happy hours and empty bars. Do people really want a totally integrated social life? Why are the tiny apartments so expensive. The writer ends up doing his work on the toilet.
The co-working spaces seem empty. I don't know much about the wework people, but I know there is some drama, he resigned or something. Well yeah, the business seems to be pretty silly. Why pay more for something that sucks? Some friends of mine said that their office was cheaper than wework, and they get to leave all their shit there every day. With wework you'd have to pack it out, or pay way too much for a permanent office. Somehow I don't think this takes the cultures around the world into account. Is everyone expected to use public space the same way?
Who does WeWork work for, do you know? I would like to. Currently I do not know.

Blog: Should Javascript be renamed JS?
https://kieranpotts.com/rebranding-javascript/
so they use the word rebrand, actually. I'll admit to confusing java and javascript, as this article says many have done before. That's one of the key reasons for renaming. But also it is difficult to tell what version of javascript an api is written for, because there isn't a standard name for different versions. so using things from github can be difficult. a new name and naming convention would maybe solve some of these problems.

News: How indie devs make money
https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/9/20903139/indie-game-developers-creators-money-funding
Basically they are all young, have no families, and have career prospects. They get grants and live in apartments that charge them less because they are students.
This was surprising to read, that most of them don't make a lot of money from games, and all seem to be aware that their income is vulnerable or temporary or both.
Some of the bet the farm. I wonder who bet the farm and lost?

Blog: Why do companies with unbounded resources still have terrible moderation?
https://moultano.wordpress.com/2019/10/02/why-do-companies-with-huge-resources-still-have-terrible-moderation/
So far companies can't outwit groups of determined shitlords, they make new innuendo, new memes, new groups.
The people companies hire to make lists or moderate content or whatever the grunt work may be, these people are outsiders to the groups they are moderating, and they can't see the meaning(s) that insiders have hidden.
And so, it isn't a matter of resources. Just different groups of people, and the strategy that has been used so far doesn't work because the groups are different.

I think it showed me I don't know what states are.
They didn't show an example of what states are. Maybe it is something basic.
Ok, cool.
Maybe I will read this later and it will make more sense? I hope so. I don't know what I read.

Anyway, what a bunch of work!
Who would have the time. It doesn't look that challenging, just like a lot of work.
But yeah, there are a lot of things I have heard of. But a lot that is new.
And who would do all three?
Hard to know where to start.

American Feminism, taking what men have and making it for women.
Why does she seem so neurotic. I don't judge. I just wonder, if she, represents, or is spectacular. Both good but like, don't lead me.
And so what if she is a cougar. Please come to my city and hang out. You seem fun and nice and I don't care if your boyfriend is younger.

Yeah, basically it is capitalism in a game. This writer nails it. You get to destroy people in your way. The thrill of victory. It is a high. Your hands shake.
And... how does this work for kids? Or just, really, do people want the game to be real, to kill people in their way? Isn't that the premise of the game?
It is a bit terrible.
A horror maybe
I'm glad it isnt just me that sees it this way.

I've been a success in avoiding the news.
So, I hadn't really heard about Greta or her views until this. Well, maybe people are changing their minds about what is happening with business and the environment. But I doubt it
And this article does a good job of explaining how powerful people flatten her image and message. Soon we'll be numb to to her message.
But, it seems like a good message to me. Capitalism is not progress. It is destroying the earth. Who will wear the crown afterwards? I'm on board.
Also, I'm going to get mine.

News: US Military Sorry Over Tweet
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-49786363
So, yeah, someone with an official account posted something inappropriate. I'm sure they were told, sometime before this incident, that they should try to keep things fun.
But yeah, I'm really proud of these people, the area 51 stormers, they've made a stealth political protest. The government actually had to responds. People didn't even really need to do anything. I bet millions of dollars were spent safeguarding whatever is inside that military base. In a sense, this is a revolutionary moment. The government was forced to respond to people joining an event on facebook.
Well, I hope there are more things like this

News: Amazon Doubles Down With More Ways to Connect Us
https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2019/09/amazon-doubles-down-new-alexa-products-echo-loop/598906/
So, yeah, we need more time to be ourselves, so another gadget is going to free us. This journalist sighs at the issue, we are over worked, over burdened, and we don't enjoy ourselves. Another product is not what we need. We need a new social construct, or at least a lot more money and the time and headspace to spend it. A bit more justice? That seems a bit too whimsical. I don't think it needs to be that complicated. Let the government start an app that tracks how much work we do. And then limit our work to 35 hours a week. Let's see it. We can do it. What would be the results?
But anyway, the journalist makes the point but sighs at the issue. Decent enough information.

Blog: How to delete a lot of emails from Gmail
https://www.expertreviews.co.uk/software/1401626/how-to-delete-all-emails-from-gmail-the-smart-way
Good advice, it worked.
It turns out when you hit select all, it selects everything on your page, which for me was 50 emails, not the 6000 I wanted to delete. But this thing pops up, if you aren't ready for it, it looks like spam. So I had never seen this before.
I think this might be crappy design.
It'll be crazy, some point in the future, I won't use gmail, or maybe any google service. Alphabet, or whatever.
Well, the blog did teach me the smart way, thank you.

Blog: Duolingo's Arabic Release
https://increment.com/testing/launching-duolingos-arabic-language-course/
This is less about the Arabic release than the release process in general. They say there are no rules, but then they list rules. They use dogfooding, testing their own product, so employees check out the course before it goes live. They catch a lot of problems this way, and no, it isn't the only thing they do to keep it magic, it was just the most memorable one.
Lots of A/B testing.
I'm not really sure if I got any insight into duolingo's process or product, but it was a decent skim. I'm glad they share what they do.

Blog: Bootcamp Guide
https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/coding-bootcamp-handbook/
This guide has a lot of information about coding bootcamps. Most of it is pretty helpful, but it does not mention any bootcamps specifically. Instead it encourages you to do your own research, mostly by finding bootcamp instructors on linkedin and find their students and messaging them. Realistically there are too many bootcamps to review them all, and the courses and instructors change. So, this kind of "you are are on your own" message seems accurate.
The guide does a good job of breaking down how much things will cost, not just in dollars, but in opportunity cost. Some of the bootcamps just don't look like they are great value. Especially if one considers that you won't be getting paid during the bootcamp, or during your job hunt. The job hunt is supposed to last about 6 months. That's a long time without income.
Anyway, this guide was well written and has info that helped me decide I probably shouldn't do a bootcamp. I'll focus on my chipping away method, and in the mean time I'll go back to my old career.

I did read some interesting stuff about rehab in another article, just can't find the link again. Need to add it here if I do.

I learned about the Iron Front, and how it was banned by the Nazis. I'd never heard of that before. The Iron Front symbol was banned at MLS games, which seems pretty fucking stupid.
So yeah, the crowd was silent for 33 minutes, that's the year the Iron Front was banned by the nazis. Then they broke out the scarves and cheered.
Fuck facism. I don't know what we're dealing with actually, though. How many of those Iron Front scarves were made by slave labor? Can't a crowd be pro something and not suck? Good luck, everyone.

Fuck facism. I don't know what we're dealing with actually, though. How many of those Iron Front scarves were made by slave labor? Can't a crowd be pro something and not suck? Good luck, everyone.

Blog: Carl Jan Gravqvist
http://www.swedishfood.com/carl-jan
This is an interview with a famous Swedish man known mostly as Carl Jan.
He is a chef and also ran a famous restaurant out of an inn in the middle of nowhere.
He also has made appearances on television, in those 'dance with me' shows, among others.
I learned that Swedes can be quite patriotic, and that complimenting their country is a good way to get them to open up.

But hey, I just got a great deal from them.
So, I'm winning.
A good idea might be a company providing the best value to its customers.

Blog: Where have all the pirates gone?
https://lithub.com/where-have-all-the-pirates-gone/
This isn't quite a blog, actually it is an excerpt from a book about the history of pirates. I found it interesting in its scope, but I wonder if they will be talking about the pirates in space that litter scifi writing.
Anyway, I learned a little bit, mostly about the mix of religion and piracy. I'd like to learn more but I also doubt that I will be reading this book any time soon.
Looks fun, though.

It is well written, and there are some good quotes:
She asked them the usual questions: what did you do, who did you hang out with, where were your friends from. “We don’t know,” they said.

A book that I'd never heard of but that sounds interesting is High Output Management. I've been thinking that books about service industry might be the most helpful thing for me to understand people's psychology. Most things seem like transactions, or job interviews.

News: The Worker Shortage in the US
https://www.vox.com/2019/8/12/20801941/us-labor-shortage-workers-quit
Yes, wages are not high enough.
Or maybe there's too much stupid work?
What happens to other countries when we take all of their labor?
This article is better than most, but still it is an act of almost ludicrous navel gazing to ignore the impact on people, persons, individuals, other nations, and many other factors.
Do I really care about the economy if I am not getting paid? I believe the answer is no, I do not care about a shortage of hotel workers.

Here you can read how the Hong Kong protestors organize their marches. Simple walks of groups of people. The social fabric exposed, holding up a great many things.
The healthcare on the streets of Hong Kong is better than anywhere is the USA.
The mega city, bigger and better than anything in the USA.
Sometimes I wonder why I am here, wherever I am, in front of a computer. Reading about these people, not just a person, these people, getting it done, makes me feel like I belong somewhere else.
This was an inspirational and dreary read, both.

Efficiency, quality, access, and connecting the globe.

Well I'm drinking the coolaid on this one. My grandfather died in an auto accident. And I love walking. Driving is so stressful, especially when everyone is on their phones, or high on opioids or whatever causes terrible driving.
Anyway, this was worth reading twice.
Automobile supremacy. Traffic Violence.
Kills 40,000 a year.
"parking lots now cover more than a third of the land area of some U.S. cities"
"Why are we taxing bus riders to pay rich people to buy McMansions and luxury electric SUVs?"
"In other words, the very fact that car crashes cause so much social damage makes it hard for those who are injured or killed by reckless drivers to receive justice."

But why do people jerk off at hobby lobby? Why do people enjoy watching videos of that?

Stanford was built to put useful things into the world. Other universities were made to educate clergymen, or to serve other purposes specific to the time of their creation.
That's about all I can remember from this one. Its been so long since I've read it. It is a fun story, but I think the timespan is so long and so complex that it isn't going to fit into a single article, but it would be too boring and tedious to read a book about it. Besides, silicon valley is still unfolding.

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/07/08/what-led-perus-former-president-to-take-his-own-life
It was a month or so ago when I read this. I had never heard of this man, nor his party, though I considered myself somewhat abreast of things in Peru.
Well, I guess I wasn't. It was well written, I remember. With information, portraits, people, perspective, and tidbits. There was drama. This story feels real, yet I don't feel like I have all of it. The author is honest enough about that being the case, at least. It is a story of a person and a politician, and a scandal and politics. Built out of pixels.

And a reminder that ETFs are the best ways to make money. To literally do nothing is best.

maybe someone will have to write a story about that, too.

News: The time I went on a lesiban cruise and it blew up my life
https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/shannonkeating/lesbian-cruise
i dont find journalism entertaining when it involves people in the writer's own life. there is no objectivity. you should be following the story, the story shouldn't follow you. this is especially true when it involves personal relationships, where private details are the meat of the story. there's always some titillating risque slosh thrown in, like chum for the carnivores.
but hey, i get it, your sexuality is your profession and you cant but not just had to give us all the details of the demise of one relationship and the beginning of the other, all the while only telling the story from your own perspective. what could go wrong?
but yeah, the cool part, this lesbian only cruise, don't give me the details of that. thanks

Blog: Pop OS review
https://itsfoss.com/pop-os-linux-review/
I was looking into buying a new computer, thought back to system 76. I saw that their new stuff all comes with PopOS, which I had never heard of. I found this review.
It looks like it is not a bad option. I'm hoping to get something cheaper than a system 76, though. I still need to look into my options. I really just want something that doesn't overheat, and that has a battery that works. Anyway, this guy says PopOS looks wonderful, and does everything you would expect it to.

I read this because I didn't have anything else that looked tempting in my kindle. But, I think I've read it before. I guessed most of the plot, and there weren't too many surprises. The characters seemed flat. I still enjoyed it. The author is clearly in love with Hong Kong, and I am, too.

Book: The Motel Life by Willy Vlautin
I got this book as a gift. I had started reading a few other things and was bored with all of them. So, I plunged into this. I do not think this is something I would have bought or checked out on my own. I like reading things like that, but hey, this is one book that I would not recommend to many people.
The narrative feels pasted together. One of the characters has a penchant for storytelling, so characters ask him to tell stories. These stories usually involve characters from the book in James Bond type scenarios. Sometimes it can be a bit hard to tell which is the real story and which one of these is a side story. I ended up skimming over the side stories after the third or fourth one. They feel sophomoric, and like stoner spiels that were written down and just had to fit somewhere. Bookending each side story is a character saying something like, "I love that story." This goaded me into disagreeing. It felt like the author was patting himself on the back.
There are some real emotions created in the book. Love and betrayal. However, the connection between the two main characters seems so gouache. They say they love each other but nothing is done or enacted to show us the love. Are they incapable of love? I can't believe I want a more traditional narrative out of this story. It just seemed to be a few drunk stories interspersed with happenstance.
Anyway, one thing I can take away from this is don't be a dumb ass. Anyone can write a book. Maybe me people should.

so, this was informative, but i don't know if i agree with the premises.

I've been reading a lot about the growth mindset lately. Struggling is how we learn. Thinking of the brain as a muscle helps people learn. And yet I think back to when I was learning German, and how stressful it was to be constantly struggling and failing. I did make a lot of progress, but it was very emotionally taxing. What I'm saying is that the growth mindset isn't a cureall. Some people will still struggle and fail even if they have the perfect growth mindset.

did I finish reading this? I can't remember. The author's description of biculturality resonated with me, but they were overshadowed by the bits about language learning.
Clearly this person had never truly studied Spanish successfully. Classes and courses, family moments. Well, she just needed speaking practice instead of studying grammar rules. Both are needed, but if speaking is what you're going to use as a measure for being fluent, or being Mexican, then you'd better practice speaking.
So, surprise, language learning lets people down, at least in the college and high school forms. Some day it might get slightly better but for now education is more of a way to get childcare. So yeehaw.

I should probably re-read this.
I remember something about a self-fulfilling prophecy. An Indian doctor that worked until she was so sick that she was bedridden, and died rather suddenly, who had lost her own parents at a young age.
Ok, I'm going to reread this and then write more.
I learned that hummingbirds can't walk, as their legs are too far back on their bodies. So they have to constantly fly. This is a metaphor for people that work too hard and don't take care of themselves.
ok, so I reread it and pulled these quotes. i think the writer had some ideas, some work, some research, she had found something like enlightenment. but i dunno, her dream about having a daughter. it doesnt vibe with me. my mom died but i'm a male, and it still effects my feelings of mortality. i guess i feel like they are missing a little something here with this article. anyway, it was worth a read.

After her death, the recollections of others could make me uneasy. Her former patients seemed to know her better than I did, this hummingbird woman, in and out of sight, forever at work.
Mania, the caption theorized, had been a solution, a way to deal with emotional pain by distracting oneself from it.
Procreation, as a 2005 paper from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology bluntly puts it, is “one of the most efficient” buffers against terror, a surefire way “to prolong a form of symbolic existence.” A year after the attacks on 9/11, the Guardian reported a 20 percent increase in the birth rate in New York hospitals. “We earn, we procreate, we pray,” explains a 2004 study on behaviors that reduce thoughts of death.
Death, I thought, was a quick stripper of personhood. The deceased’s tastes are erased by the time of the service.
ok, so I reread it and pulled these quotes. i think the writer had some ideas, some work, some research, she had found something like enlightenment. but i dunno, her dream about having a daughter. it doesnt vibe with me. my mom died but i'm a male, and it still effects my feelings of mortality. i guess i feel like they are missing a little something here with this article. anyway, it was worth a read.
News: Free Speech at High School
https://jezebel.com/a-high-school-journalist-profiled-a-fellow-student-work-1834416170
A high school paper profiled a fellow student that works in porn, and the school board tried to get the paper shut down, or something like that. Free speech was at issue.
Is this the streisand effect? I think so.
Anyway, school is failing lots of people, emotionally as well as educationally. We don't need social fabric anyways, so it's cool.

News: Simcity 3000 the unbeatable game
https://theoutline.com/post/7373/you-cant-beat-an-unwinnable-game-you-break-it?zd=1&zi=x5ubroah
the way to get the biggest city in sim city? nobody lives over the age of 55. no schools, no hospitals.
i learned that sim city was developed by a guy who lost everything in 91 to a wildfire.
i want to learn more about the guy that beat the game though, apparently he is filipino and also an architect.

News: That Noise? the rich neighbors diggining a 100 million dollar pool out of bedrock
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/05/nyregion/gentrification-one-percent-manhattan.html
I read this one quite a while ago. I remember some grumpy neighbors moving.
It was an anonymous tip that let people know who actually owned the building.
I read this expecting to see wealthy people impacted by gentrification. I was hoping to laugh at them. Instead, everyone is everyone.

News: Democratic Socialism is surging in Iowa
https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2019/04/democratic-socialism-surging-iowa-ahead-2020/586441/
my biggest takeaway from this was that they are training people to redirect the conversation during "town hall" meetings. they practice raising their hands quickly.
they drink beer together.
i feel like i dont really know what keeps these people together. who are the likely informants, haha?

News: Amsterdam eliminates 11,000 urban parking spots
https://www.citylab.com/transportation/2019/03/amsterdam-cars-parking-spaces-bike-lanes-trees-green-left/586108/
they are doing some maintenance, which means the parking spaces would be unusable for some time, and just not replacing the spots.

News: Domino's tracker a lie
https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/i-staked-out-my-local-dominos-to-see-just-how-accurate-its-pizza-tracker-is
turns out the timing and checks aren't really what's going on. its just a guess about what should be happening, probably based on averages. ok, well, i do want pizza, but not like that
then when i googled the article name to get the link, i found what looks like a parody news site that says the same thing, only its from 2017: https://thenextweb.com/distract/2017/11/28/dominos-tracker-app-doesnt-actually-know-who-is-checking-your-pizza/
so, the pizza is mediocre and the app is mediocre, but both are entertaining.

News: San Francisco Sucks
https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/how-san-francisco-broke-americas-heart/2019/05/21/ef9a0ac0-70ea-11e9-9eb4-0828f5389013_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.d24871e1057a
this is one of those stories that feels like it only gets at the bitchy overtone of the story and doesnt really dig deeply enough to give me a real understanding. the outcome is frustration rather than inspiration or clarity. san francisco is becoming less gay, cheap, fun, inclusive, thoughtful. that's the game, well ok. let's do our part and hate what has become and do the nostalgia thing. because nothing at all has gotten better.

Cooking: Hoja Santa
https://www.austinchronicle.com/daily/food/2012-08-24/hoja-santa/
i collected some of this from my friend's yard. it smells a bit like rootbeer. it is used as a wrap and imbues food with an anise/rootbeer edge. the leaves need to be wilted for it to work. i am going to try it out in some scrambled eggs.

News: Nculear Plants Unprepared for Climate Crisis
https://www.commondreams.org/tag/nuclear-power
this guy says he has changed teams, he used to work for nuclear power but now he works for wind power. he says the potential for nuclear plants to fail and make land uninhabitable for long periods of time makes them untenable. he wants a plant that will not emit anything harmful if it fails, but no plants currently meet that stipulation, which essentially means he is against nuclear power. he lists the four most recent permitted nuclear plants and describes how each one has stalled or been cancelled. they are complex buildings that are difficult to build on schedule/budget.
i was surprised that he didn't mention storing nuclear waste, but also that he said fukushima daichi was a big event in his carreer.
