Blog: What is semantic HTML

https://html.com/semantic-markup/

semantic html was on my developer roadmap, so i looked it up. here i am having read about it, not knowing what it was called.  its the tags that help computers understand the website.  this helps with search engine optimization as well as making websites more accessible, like to screen readers, but also other things.

anyway now I know what it is called

News: Online noone know you are poor

https://www.theguardian.com/money/2019/oct/08/online-poor-part-time-jok
well if you just do stuff and don't make money then you aren't making money and you might be an ignorant snob.

pretty cool that one person working part time in a grocery store can get a whole family health insurance.  thankfully everyone is healthy

but yeah this feels like one of those pieces where i'm hearing teenagery things from an adult, and i don't like that vibe

News: 1983 Beirut Bombing Kinda Like Today

https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/the-1983-beirut-barracks-bombing-and-the-current-us-retreat-from-syria

Well I'd never heard of this bombing.  It was the worst loss of life in a single day for the marines since Iwo Jima

And yeah, a sudden withdraw.  What could go wrong?

But I think this article is also a big slop of skewed views that go unexplained, some might call it propaganda.

As the U.S. wrestles with drug policy, the environment, corruption, natural disasters: pretty much everything.  Is it really so bad that Russia and Iran "gain some ground"?  I mean, it is a big fucking chess game and people aren't people.

News: The Ghost Towers of Iran's Housing Crisis

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/10/21/ghost-towers

So there was a housing shortage, so they built big apartment blocks in the desert.  Looks like South Korea a bit, but yeah they forgot to add community space like parks and places for shops.  Markets have moved in but they look like tarps covering parking lots.  People have really long commutes.  It looks like... a disaster, or maybe a couple of disasters

So they didn't even build enough of them? Would more shitty buildings far from actual city life make a housing crisis better, or make commutes worse?

Well anyway, check out the photos.  It looks pretty bleak, but kind of neat.

News: Shroud moves to Mixer

https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/24/20930647/twitch-shroud-mixer-microsoft-ninja-amazon-exclusive

cool i guess he gets a salary to play games? like one long commercial

I watched a bit of his stream the other day, he didn't seem to be playing that well, really.  missing some shots, "getting overwhelmed" by controls.  i mean he still played way better than an average player but, not his old self

and yeah, he moves to another network, and, well, i had no idea microsoft was aiming to do something like make a streaming site, or poach talent from others

i dont really know what twitch did or didn't do wrong, but my guess is a lot.

News: How Handmade is Titos?

https://www.eater.com/2019/10/16/20893218/titos-handmade-vodka-craft-spirit
it is made on such a huge scale that it can't be done by hand, but there must be some manual part to it

and basically, it is just grain alcohol that has been distilled a few more times

it is good, but it is not that special

News: Gmail makes us pay

https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/gmail-hooked-us-on-free-storage-now-google-is-making-us-pay?utm_source=digg

well the day has come, or came a while ago, and i'm writing about it now.  gmail has a storage cap at 15gb.  does that combine with my drive? I can't tell.  seems like i have more than 15 gigs of stuff

but too many emails

i deleted a lot of spam emails and cleared up like 10%, which is not bad

now i definitely don't have to pay.  cool

News: Bitcoin and Child Porn with a connection in South Korea

https://qz.com/1730209/a-bitcoin-powered-child-porn-site-was-undone-by-a-right-click/

Well gross

The website said "don't upload adult porn"

Lots of the people arrested for this, busted for this, were in law enforcement in the USA.

The server was based in South Korea.

Thankfully they were bad at web design, they left the name of the server in the open.

Woulda been cool if the popo had gotten this done a bit earlier

I guess they rescued some kids.

But what is the overall arch here? That the internet needs to be controlled and monitored? Or that it is already controlled and monitored but that the people in charge are sleeping on the important shit? What do they think is important?

Blog: Introduction to web APIs

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn/JavaScript/Client-side_web_APIs/Introduction
So I googled, "what is an api?" and this article came up.  They use a metaphor of an electrical plug to explain an API.  You don't have to be an electrician to plug something in.  An API is the part you plug in.  The API probably does some voodoo in a rust or C to get you what you need in your browser, but you don't have to use rust or C yourself.

Some APIs are built into the browser, some are third party.  This article links to a lot of other things that I need to read.  I'm glad to have found this resource.

News: Elijah Cummings has died

https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2019/10/17/oversight-chairman-elijah-cummings-dies-487447
He just got promoted in January but he died.  How did he do all that work while being sick?

Why don't they tell us what he died from?

Well, I guess he was critical of the president.  That's cool.  I guess, but to what end.

I don't really know who this guy was or is.

Who is going to take his place in the important committee?

News: wework's ideal life, for a day

http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/10/i-lived-adam-neumanns-perfect-life-for-a-dayit-was-dismal.html

Well it looks like things are over priced and generally not that cool.  The nap room with a person snoring.  The workers who confuse appointments, maybe that isn't special to WeWork.  But yeah, white claw happy hours and empty bars.  Do people really want a totally integrated social life?  Why are the tiny apartments so expensive.  The writer ends up doing his work on the toilet.

The co-working spaces seem empty.  I don't know much about the wework people, but I know there is some drama, he resigned or something.  Well yeah, the business seems to be pretty silly.  Why pay more for something that sucks? Some friends of mine said that their office was cheaper than wework, and they get to leave all their shit there every day.  With wework you'd have to pack it out, or pay way too much for a permanent office.  Somehow I don't think this takes the cultures around the world into account.  Is everyone expected to use public space the same way?

Who does WeWork work for, do you know? I would like to.  Currently I do not know.

News: An asian drug kingpin

https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/meth-syndicate/?utm_source=pocket-newtab

Well, no juicy details about his exploits.  He is a businessman selling drugs?

Why do so many people need to escape by taking drugs?

Anyway, I hope I learn more about this story.

Blog: Should Javascript be renamed JS?

https://kieranpotts.com/rebranding-javascript/

so they use the word rebrand, actually.  I'll admit to confusing java and javascript, as this article says many have done before.  That's one of the key reasons for renaming.  But also it is difficult to tell what version of javascript an api is written for, because there isn't a standard name for different versions.  so using things from github can be difficult. a new name and naming convention would maybe solve some of these problems.

News: How indie devs make money

https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/9/20903139/indie-game-developers-creators-money-funding

Basically they are all young, have no families, and have career prospects.  They get grants and live in apartments that charge them less because they are students.

This was surprising to read, that most of them don't make a lot of money from games, and all seem to be aware that their income is vulnerable or temporary or both.

Some of the bet the farm.  I wonder who bet the farm and lost?

https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/how-to-choose-which-programming-language-you-should-learn-in-2019-60abef241012/

its funny this talks about similar articles being big lists, but this is a big list

i learned that ruby is something like a natural language.  which sounds neat.  i'd like to see it.

News: Persistence Hunting

https://undark.org/2019/10/03/persistent-myth-persistence-hunting/

So basically the evidence, bones and things, does not support the idea that humans ran and ran and ran to hunt prey.

People talk about this all the time.  I'll just listen when they do.

Blog: Why do companies with unbounded resources still have terrible moderation?

https://moultano.wordpress.com/2019/10/02/why-do-companies-with-huge-resources-still-have-terrible-moderation/

So far companies can't outwit groups of determined shitlords, they make new innuendo, new memes, new groups.

The people companies hire to make lists or moderate content or whatever the grunt work may be, these people are outsiders to the groups they are moderating, and they can't see the meaning(s) that insiders have hidden.

And so, it isn't a matter of resources.  Just different groups of people, and the strategy that has been used so far doesn't work because the groups are different.

Blog: Reasons to learn Redux

https://www.robinwieruch.de/redux-javascript

This was technical, and there was code.  Was the code part of the narrative? I don't understand the code so I can't say for sure, but maybe.

I don't think this convinced me to learn Redux.

I think it showed me I don't know what states are.

They didn't show an example of what states are.  Maybe it is something basic.

Ok, cool.

Maybe I will read this later and it will make more sense? I hope so.  I don't know what I read.

News: FI/RE

https://nypost.com/2019/10/08/inside-the-strange-secretive-lives-of-rich-millennial-cheapskates
well it sounds kind of miserable, how about finding someone who has already passed the finish line, someone who has retired

this looks like a "shit on young people" lunchable for people with too much money and power.

thank you!

Blog: FCC 2019 Web Developer Roadmap

https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/2019-web-developer-roadmap/

Well it looks like a lot of info and a lot of things I have to learn.  It is interesting to see the commentary on these roadmaps.  I searched for the roadmaps and looked at them, and this was the second link.

Anyway, what a bunch of work!

Who would have the time.  It doesn't look that challenging, just like a lot of work.

But yeah, there are a lot of things I have heard of.  But a lot that is new.

And who would do all three?

Hard to know where to start.

Found out about a good movie to watch.

Dunno if I'm into neurosurgery.

Dunno if this story really gets it.

Lots of sensational tidbits.

But better than average.

Blog: Why I hate living in my tiny house

https://www.fastcompany.com/90407740/why-i-hate-living-in-my-tiny-house

is she just grumpy.  is it poorly designed.  or does she have too much stuff

housing needs a big re-think in almost every place in the USA and it seems like maybe everywhere

Blog: Darkness on the Edge of Cougartown

https://www.thecut.com/2019/10/what-no-one-tells-you-about-dating-a-younger-man.html

Why does this remind me of something else I've read.

American Feminism, taking what men have and making it for women.

Why does she seem so neurotic.  I don't judge.  I just wonder, if she, represents, or is spectacular.  Both good but like, don't lead me.

And so what if she is a cougar.  Please come to my city and hang out.  You seem fun and nice and I don't care if your boyfriend is younger.

News: What really happens when you become a millionaire

https://marker.medium.com/what-really-happens-when-you-become-an-overnight-millionaire-acac42990175

Well, this guy worked really hard and always works hard and probably won't really be able to partner up until something really changes in his life.  It isn't just that he got rich quickly.  He hustled, is love a hustle? I don't know but my intuition says no.

I don't really feel sorry for him, but I don't envy him either.  Yeah, it goes like that.

News: A game like heroin

https://themillions.com/2019/09/a-game-like-heroin-on-escapism-twitchcon-and-kicking-the-fortnite-habit.html

Yeah, basically it is capitalism in a game.  This writer nails it.  You get to destroy people in your way.  The thrill of victory.  It is a high.  Your hands shake.

And... how does this work for kids?  Or just, really, do people want the game to be real, to kill people in their way?  Isn't that the premise of the game?

It is a bit terrible.

A horror maybe

I'm glad it isnt just me that sees it this way.

News: David E. Shaw and the ultimate college hedge

http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/09/david-e-shaw-college-donations.html

Well, its one of those look how the rich live.  It really looks exhausting.

The details are good.  People get fired for forgetting the smallest things.

But yeah, if you have a shit load of money you just spread it around and do your life like your business and get what you want.  Honestly this guy doesn't sound that awful for being super rich.  He may have actually figured out some things that people hadn't before.  Maybe he earned it.  Well, now his kids are going to live in his shadow.  Good luck to them all

Just don't criminalize my hustle.

News: Sinners in the Hands of Greta

https://newrepublic.com/article/155170/sinners-hands-angry-greta-thunberg

I've been a success in avoiding the news.

So, I hadn't really heard about Greta or her views until this.  Well, maybe people are changing their minds about what is happening with business and the environment.  But I doubt it

And this article does a good job of explaining how powerful people flatten her image and message.  Soon we'll be numb to to her message.

But, it seems like a good message to me.  Capitalism is not progress.  It is destroying the earth.  Who will wear the crown afterwards? I'm on board.

Also, I'm going to get mine.

News: The Tyranny of Economists

https://newrepublic.com/article/155205/tyranny-economists

Just a bunch of fuckers pulling the line for the establishment.  Wrong almost all the time.  Big list of problems, details.  But, an economist can't self destruct the system they benefit from.  Elite co-opt.

There's a book to read or something.

It was nice to see this all written down even if my review or summary doesn't show it.
