Stanford was built to put useful things into the world. Other universities were made to educate clergymen, or to serve other purposes specific to the time of their creation.
That's about all I can remember from this one. Its been so long since I've read it. It is a fun story, but I think the timespan is so long and so complex that it isn't going to fit into a single article, but it would be too boring and tedious to read a book about it. Besides, silicon valley is still unfolding.
